2 KEY ELEMENTS OF SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS NETWORKING

For business owners, time is at a premium and it's crucial to get the best return on investment for time spent at events or meetings. And, since business is an exercise in continuing education for most people, we can always use tips on how to be more successful in our efforts to meet new contacts and promote a company and its products or services.

Charlie Cook wrote an article that discusses taking a different approach to business networking than what might come naturally. Instead of taking any opportunity to talk about ourselves and pass our business card out to as many new contacts as possible - a "push" approach - try the opposite instead. Ask about the person you're meeting and the challenges they face in their business. Ask for their card and follow up.

This puts you in a position to be in control of making contact rather than waiting for someone to contact you and it also lets you establish yourself as someone who is diligent and can solve problems - perhaps by forwarding an article you read (or one you wrote) related to something you discussed when you met your new prospect.

MICROSOFT WORD 2007 / 2010 TIPS: ADD A WATERMARK TO A DOCUMENT

Whether you want to add your logo to each page of a document or mark it as a draft, adding a watermark can be a challenge for many Word users. Thanks to the following tip from K2 Office Tips, learning to add a watermark to your document is quick and easy.

Watermarks are text or pictures that appear behind the text. Follow these steps to add a watermark to your document in Microsoft Word 2007 / 2010:

  1. Open a new blank document, or open an existing document.
  2. Click on the Page Layout Tab in the Ribbon.
  3. In the Page Background group, click Watermark.
  4. Click on a design in the gallery or create a custom watermark.
  5. Select the Picture, if you are creating a Picture watermark. Enter the Text, if you are creating a Text watermark.
  6. Use the Print Layout view to see the watermark as it will print.
The watermark displays on the background of each page.

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR NEXT SMARTPHONE

Everywhere you look, people are intently gazing at the screens of their iPhones and Blackberries, tapping away at the keyboard, texting, checking email or surfing the Internet.

More and more, smartphones are becoming essential tools for doing business in a fast-paced world. The problem comes in figuring out which phone to buy to suit the needs of a specific user with unique business needs.

We came across a fantastic web site in the Blue Fish Group newsletter that lets you select from a variety of popular smartphones, view them up close and interactively "tour" the phone's menus and buttons to orient yourself with its features and functionality. Very cool!

7 WAYS TO MAKE A GREAT FIRST IMPRESSION

We've all know how the saying goes: "You only get one chance to make a first impression." And, with research showing that we have between 7 and 17 seconds before the person we're interacting with forms an opinion of us, the pressure is on.

The Self-Growth web site featured an article by Bill Lampton that shares 7 tips for putting your best foot forward when making a first impression on a new contact.
