SMALL BUSINESS GROUP WELCOMES ONLINE TAX TOOL

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) is applauding a new tax tool that is now available to businesses to help them get accurate information on their taxes.

Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has launched the My Business Account for small business.

The new online tool allows users to communicate electronically with CRA and get definitive answers to their tax questions. With the new tool, business owners will be able to email questions to CRA and receive written answers.

“More importantly, CRA will honour its response even if it is later found to be incorrect, as long as CRA has been provided with all the relevant information,” the CFIB stated in a press release.

THE RETURN OF PST

Prior to the reimplementation of PST on April 1, 2013 all businesses will need to prepare their electronic and manual systems and processes, collect, and pay PST and GST. Because of the complexity of reverting back to PST, the government is planning the implementation in stages to ensure a smooth transition.

During the transition period the government will implement a new registration, compliance and reporting system to help streamline the administration process and reduce costs. Approximately 100,000 businesses will be registered as tax collectors on this system. When registered, you will be provided with information and training on tax applications, collection, compliance and the reporting rules relating to PST.

Information will be provided through web-based videos and seminars as well as on the PST in BC web site. More details on these outreach programs will be published once they have been confirmed.

BEWARE OF PHISHING: CANADA REVENUE AGENCY DOES NOT REQUEST INFORMATION BY EMAIL

Did you receive an email from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) asking you for personal information or to click on a link to get your refund?

Beware of PhishingSTOP. It’s a "phishing" scam.
The CRA does not ask for personal information of any kind by email. Even though these emails can look real, they do not come from CRA. They are "phishing" scams that contain special coding or downloadable forms designed to steal your
personal or financial information.

What is phishing?
Phishing is an email scam to steal personal or financial information using official-looking emails that direct you to fake Web sites that look identical or similar to those of a legitimate business, bank, or government department. The fake Web site will then request personal or financial information.

Most phishing emails include false statements intended to create the impression that you have to do something right away.

If you receive these emails, close them right away and call the CRA at 1-800-959-8281 to report them.

BOOK OF THE MONTH: BLINK - THE POWER OF THINKING WITHOUT THINKING

Blink: The Power of Thinking Without ThinkingIn Blink, Malcolm Gladwell revolutionizes the way we understand the world within. Blink is a book about how we think without thinking, about choices that seem to be made in an instant - in the blink of an eye - that actually aren't as simple as they seem.

Why are some people brilliant decision makers, while others are consistently inept? Why do some people follow their instincts and win, while others end up stumbling into error? How do our brains really work?
