CASL - Canadian Anti-Spam LegislationNew legislation designed to take aim at unsolicited email - aka spam - will take effect in Canada in July 1, 2014. While many organizations may not even be aware of the legislation, it's in the best interest of all businesses to ensure compliance with the new legislation to avoid hefty penalties. These fines can be assessed in amounts up to a staggering $1,000,000 per violation for individuals and $10,000,000 per infraction for businesses.

10 WAYS TO BOOST PROFITS WHEN RAISING PRICES IS NOT AN OPTION

10 Ways to Boost Profits When Raising Prices Isn't An OptionConsumers are typically a price-sensitive bunch, and are always on the lookout for a bargain when shopping for goods and services. Basic economic theory teaches us that price and demand have an inverse relationship - decreasing prices will increase consumer demand, while increasing prices will decrease demand. As a business owner, this makes it challenging to boost profits by increasing prices.

However, there are other approaches a business can take in order to realize greater profitability without impacting demand due to a higher price tag.

Steve Lefever wrote a great article that discusses 10 ways companies can boost profits without raising prices. The list of tips includes:

  1. Set a gross profit goal
  2. Tune up your product mix
  3. Look at pricing and product strategy
  4. Discount with purpose, not from habit
  5. Buy better and smarter
  6. Introduce counter-cyclical products
  7. Take action
  8. Look around you
  9. Think outside the box
  10. Nothing ventured, nothing gained

FEATURED BOOK: GETTING TO PLAN B - BREAKING THROUGH TO A BETTER BUSINESS MODEL

Getting to Plan B: Breaking Through to a Better Business ModelIn the ever-evolving world of business, it's crucial to remain agile in your business plan in order to stay ahead of the game. When customer demands and technology are constantly on the move, being able to take a step back and re-evaluate your business model are key to surviving long-term.

As John Mullins and Randy Komisar explain in Getting to Plan B, new businesses are fraught with uncertainty. To succeed, you must change the plan in real time as inevitable challenges arise. In fact, studies show that entrepreneurs who stick rigidly to their Plan A stand a greater chance of failing - and that many successful businesses barely resemble their founders' original idea.

The authors provide a rigorous process for stress testing your Plan A and determining how to alter it so your business makes money, solves customer needs, and endures.

Filled with success stories and cautionary tales, this book offers real cases illustrating the authors' unique process. Whether your idea is for a start-up or a new business unit within your organization, Getting to Plan B contains the road map you need to reach success.
