6 WAYS TO GET READY FOR TAX FILING

In order to ensure you pay the minimum tax possible when it's time to file your income tax return, it's crucial to make sure your return is accurate and complete, and to take advantage of tax credits and other deductions for which you may be eligible.

Canadian tax guru Evelyn Jacks has written a very helpful article on what she considers her top six tax filing pre-requisites. Here are some highlights from the list:

  1. Take note of tax filing deadlines - filing deadlines for individuals with employment income and sole proprietors are different, so make sure you are aware of relevant deadlines for you.

  2. Get tax documents together - plan to do the entire family's returns together and sort receipts according to major expense categories. Be sure to keep your T-slips with your other documents so they don't get misplaced as you receive them.

  3. Do a 2013 life events checklist - were there any major events in your life during the previous year? A birth? Death? Marriage? Divorce? These events can have tax implications, so be sure to ask an advisor how these changes could affect your tax situation.

  4. Download forms and tax checklist documents to complete your return - these can help guide you when sorting receipts and with reporting rental income, investment income, business income, and purchase or disposition of assets. Visit www.nalh.ca/forms

  5. Find out what's new in tax - Tax laws are ever-changing. Make sure you're informed about important changes that may affect your tax owning or refund.

  6. It's your money, your life - Over the past several years, average tax refunds have well exceeded $1,600. When you make it your business to reclaim that money sooner, you're taking the first step to financial fitness. Putting your refund towards debt or savings in a TFSA or RRSP will propel your financial fitness forward. It's just smart to make tax filing savvy part of your self-improvement plans this year.

JOYCE WISHART APPOINTED TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS FOR ACCESS YOUTH OUTREACH SERVICES

Access Youth Outreach ServicesNALH's Managing Director, Joyce Wishart, was recently selected to join the Board of Directors for ACCESS, a local organization dedicated to providing outreach support and services to at-risk youth between the ages of 10-18 in the Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, and Port Moody areas.

ACCESS has had success with their innovative and award-winning programs, predominantly Project Reach Out, which is a mobile drop-in centre and outreach program. Project Reach Out meets youth where they are, instead of waiting for them search for resources on their own. As ACCESS grows, the organization is aligning its efforts toward a vision in which there are similar programs for youth in every community.

Joyce is looking forward to working with the ACCESS team to help the organization grow and make a difference in the lives of local youth.
