BOOKKEEPING TIP: LABEL RECEIPTS AT POINT OF PURCHASE

Here’s a quick tip that will save you significant time when you sit down to sort receipts and get your paperwork ready to drop off at your bookkeeper’s office. When you make a purchase at a store, restaurant or other vendor, when the clerk hands you your receipt, quickly write on the receipt which account was used to pay. Was it your business chequing? Company credit card? Personal debit card? Cash? Use labels or abbreviations that will make sense not only to you, but to your bookkeeper.

Labeling your receipts as you go along will save you a lot of time you’d otherwise spend scrutinizing the fine print on your receipts to check account numbers and figure out if the purchase was made with debit, credit or cash.

NALH WINS GRAND PRIZE IN IMOGO / PROVINCE IT MAKEOVER CONTEST

You gotta be in it to win it! We’ve all heard that saying before. And, in this case, we’re definitely glad we were in it!

Several weeks back, we saw an article in the Province about a company called Imogo who was holding a contest offering an IT Makeover worth more than $16,000 for the Grand Prize winner!

The contest requested entrants to tell how technology has helped their business over the years. In our company’s “lifetime” there have been major changes in technology that have affected how we complete our work, deliver our service and collaborate with our clients. Long gone are the days of 16-column worksheets and manual writing of financial statements! Ever-evolving software suites have made the bookkeeping process more efficient than ever.

We carefully crafted our technological tale and submitted it for consideration in the contest. Each week when we heard about one of the other prizes being given away, we were – perhaps, strangely – happy that we didn’t win. Our Managing Director said to our staff, “That just means that we’re going to win the Grand Prize!” And, sure enough, we did!

PLANNING FOR "SUCCESS"ION

You've built a successful business through many years - investing your time, blood, sweat and tears and you came out on top. When the time comes to retire or pass the company down, you want to be sure that the succession plan for your company takes into account a number of things that will ensure its continued success - even after you hand the reins to your successor.

TD Waterhouse published an article by the Vancouver Sun about things to consider when passing the torch the right way.

THE CUSTOMER IS NEVER WRONG - BUT IS IT THE WRONG CUSTOMER?

With competition in just about every market at an all-time high, it's easy to be tempted to take on any and every new customer we can get our hands on. But, there are downfalls to taking on a project or client that doesn't fit well with who we are and what we do well.

The fact is that no matter how good we are at what we do, we will simply never be the right fit for every single person we meet. Many factors are at play when determining whether a relationship will succeed - and the same is true in business. Personality, areas of expertise and cultural differences can all play a part in a less-than-fruitful partnership.

Nina Kaufman of Making It Legal wrote an interesting article discussing some key reasons why it's important to choose our customers with care.
