PLEDGE YOUR SUPPORT TO NALH'S TEAMS IN RAISING MONEY FOR THE MS SOCIETY

Snapquest fundraising even for the MS SocietyMultiple Sclerosis (MS) is a disease that affects between 55,000-75,000 Canadians. This means that one person in approximately every 500-1,000 Canadians will be stricken with MS.

Many members of the NALH team personally know one or more people who have been diagnosed with MS and have witnessed the effects the disease can have on those who are living with it. In order to raise money for MS research, our entire staff is coming together to participate in Snapquest, a fundraising event sponsored by the MS Society.

To encourage some friendly intra-office fundraising competition, we have created two teams: Team 1 includes Joyce, Barb, Liane, and Jason. Team 2 is comprised of Carly, Cherie, Irene, and Sabine.

As part of our commitment to the event, we have set a fundraising goal of $1,500 for our team and we need your help to meet that goal! Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to one of our two teams by clicking on the links below.

Any amount helps and, together, we can work towards finding a cure for MS. We can picture it. Can you?

NEW, MORE DETAILED CRA FORM T1135 REQUIRED FOR FOREIGN PROPERTY OWNERS

Do you own property outside Canada? If so, beginning with tax year 2013, you'll be required by the Canada Revenue Agency to complete a new, more detailed Foreign Income Verification Statement (Form T1135) as part of your next income tax return.

The Canada Revenue Agency requires that form T1135 be filed by Canadian resident individuals, corporations and trusts who own foreign investment property with a cost of more than $100,000.

Foreign investment property includes amounts in foreign bank accounts, shares in foreign companies, real estate situated outside Canada as well as interests in certain non-resident trusts, bonds or debentures issued by foreign companies or governments and interests ior units in offshore mutual funds.

There are also some types of property that are not required to be reported such as property held for personal use and assets used in an active business such as inventory, equipment or buildings.

9 QUALITIES OF TRULY CONFIDENT PEOPLE

Confidence is an important trait to possess on the road to success. While sometimes one can be mistaken for the other, there's a vast difference between arrogance and confidence. We recently came across an article on LinkedIn written by Dharmesh Shah of HubSpot which talks about 9 qualities that those who are truly confident commonly possess. Below you will find a sneak peek of the list. You may be surprised by some of the qualities Shah identifies as synonymous with confidence.

  1. They take a stand not because they think they are always right, but because they are not afraid to be wrong
  2. They listen ten times more than they speak
  3. They duck the spotlight so it shines on others
  4. They freely ask for help
  5. They think "why not me?"
  6. They don't put down other people
  7. They aren't afraid to look silly
  8. They own their mistakes
  9. They only seek approval from the people who really matter

BOOK OF THE MONTH: CANADIANS & THE IRS - WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT UNCLE SAM

Canadians & the IRS by Angela Preteau Did you know that the number of days you spend in the U.S. each year can deem you to be a U.S. resident for tax purposes? This would mean that you would be subject to all the U.S. tax laws and reporting regimes. If you are not careful, you could technically be in the United States as an “illegal alien.” You could even be a United States citizen and not realize it, and that has tax consequences.

Did you know that owning U.S. real estate and/or U.S. securities could create U.S. gift and estate tax issues for you? Also, there are certain types of income that are taxable in one country but not in the other, and some tax credits and exemptions are applied differently in both countries as well.
