ARE YOU PAYING TOO MUCH TAX? RECENT INFORMATION FROM CRA SUGGESTS MANY CANADIANS ARE

What percentage of taxes are you paying? No one likes to pay more taxes than they have to, but information recently released by Canada Revenue Agency shows that the average amount of income tax refunds Canadians received is up by $70 over the previous year. This means that, throughout the year, Canadians are overpaying in withholding taxes to CRA.

In fact, just six years ago in 2006, the average tax refund was 27% less than what taxpayers received from their 2011 returns. This means that tax overpayment is steadily on the rise and that equals less money in your pocket on a monthly basis.

In a recent article from The Knowledge Bureau, Evelyn Jacks points out that money which is being overpaid to CRA could, instead, be invested throughout the year in Tax-Free Savings Accounts, RRSPs or other investment vehicles that provide a return on the money being invested.

SERVICE INDUSTRY GETS SURPRISE REALITY CHECK FROM CRA ON TIPS

Service Industry Gets Surprise Reality Check from CRA on TipsWhile many people are not aware, tips and gratuitities such as those earned by restaurant servers, hairdressers and other service professionals are considered taxable income by Canada Revenue Agency. There is a myth that a server's tips is equal to about 10% of their wage is a serious miscalculation, with most servers earning 100-200% and even up to 400% of their wage in tips. This can mean a nasty surprise come tax time.

Still, many people under-report or hide income generated from tips and gratuities due to the fact that cash income is difficult to track. However, CRA conducted a surprise audit of 145 servers in the St. Catherines Ontario area and discovered more than $1.7million in unreported income over a 2 year period. This left each of the audited workers with an average tax bill of about $1,500. Ouch!

An article on the JA Smith discusses the audit conducted by CRA and the ramifications of under-reporting or hiding income.

HOW TO INSPIRE AN OWNERSHIP SPIRIT AMONG EMPLOYEES

How to Inspire An Ownership Spirit Among EmployeesMany business owners wish their employees shared the same level of passsion for their business as they do. And, in spite of their best efforts, many companies are just not able to inspire their teams to go that extra mile and truly give their all at work.

By the same token, there are some companies who defy the odds and are able to create a culture where employees are passionate and cooperative, all working towards common goals.

Entrepreneur.com author Marcus Erb wrote a great article on ways to inspire an ownership spirit with staff, including:

  • Connect employees to the big picture
  • Reward employees who go beyond "the norm"
  • Make decisions and debates transparent
  • Collaborate on goals and decisions

The article details strategies for each of these approaches that will help you build a passionate, cohesive team.
